JAPAN-APSARA Safeguarding Angkor

Bayon 3D Project
Bayon Temple as a whole has the most complex and peculiar appearance of all Angkor monuments. We are currently engaging in a project to preserve Bayon’s unique appearance in digital format, as the world’s first attempt to measure such an enormous monument in three dimensions.
By surveying the entire monument from desired angles and using a digital model for analyzing the shape of the monument in detail, we have steadily laid the groundwork for analyzing complex masonry structures, studying the deity faces and other decorative carvings located high up on the towers, and comparing and contrasting various parts of the long bas-relief work. Ultimately, we aim to use the 3D information to create an archive of various study materials and a virtual forum for use in the tourism and education fields.

This research project is being carried out in cooperation with the “Development of fundamental software technologies for digital archives” (representative: Prof. Katsushi Ikeuchi), a study subsidized by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
