Conservation Unit

The Conservation Unit is divided into groups of conservators according to temples that they control. Each group has fairly large number of guards, who perform such tasks as:

  • Sanitation: Clean up the site.
  • Enforcement of regulations: Prohibit any kind of selling inside the site.
  • Environmental protection: Take care of the landscape around the site and survey the surrounding trees for potential risks (such as falling branches).
  • Safety: Make sure that local and foreign visitors do not get harmed at the temples.
  • Relationship to surrounding villagers: Avoid home building or any kind of construction, deforestion, destruction of sites of archaeological interest etc.

Other activities of Roluos Group Conservation:

The two Cambodian archaeologists who have overseen at the Roluos Group Conservation are also responsible for Site Management of Preah Ko (management of man power, material equipment and schedule), dismantling and restoration, architectural and structural observation. More over, they are measuring and drawing, including the Registration system and technical reports for documentation.

Restoration activity was conducted on the central East Tower of Preah Ko temple:

  • The south-east of the 1st level: has been finished since January, 2005.
  • The south-west of the 1st level: 90% is finished and using bricks; 641 blocks (consisting of 274 new inner bricks, 360 outer bricks and 7 ancient outer bricks).
  • The north-east of the 2nd level: Brick work is more than half finished by using 6 sticks of fibreglass, supported drilling in 1 meter depth and 263 brick blocks have been used as 134 new inner bricks, 129 new outer bricks.
  • The south-east of the 2nd level: activity is started by using 2 sticks of fibreglass drilled to a depth of 1 meter and 238 bricks blocks have been used as 95 new inner bricks, 117 new outer bricks and 26 ancient outer bricks.
