Management plan for Angkor Park
The Thomas Fraser Society of New Zealand has proposed
to establish a management plan for Angkor Park for the next
decade, financed by the government of New Zealand, to offer
visitors a chance to diversify their experience in Angkor
Park to include not only the enjoyment of the monuments
but also of village life and the natural environment.
Introduction of new panoramic sites to observe sun set
Phnom Bakheng and Angkor Vat are overcrowded by visitors
who would like to admire the sun set. It is necessary to
identify and manage new panoramic sites to make them attractive
for the visitors. Such a project must be a collaboration
between the Department of Monuments and the Department of
Tourism.
Information sessions for the different actors in the tourism
business
The Department of Tourism has to organize information sessions
on such issues as the training activities and the development
of new regulation regarding the management of visitors at
Angkor Park. Such sessions should also focus on winning
tourism business for the protection of the cultural heritage.
The Department of Tourism will collaborate with the other
departments of APSARA Authority in organizing and teaching
such sessions.
Program to win the local population for the protection
of the cultural heritage
The policy of sustainable development, especially in the
tourism sector, prescribed by the government, requires the
establishment of a program to win the population living
within the Angkor Park for the protection of the cultural
heritage. A group of educators has been tasked in 2003 with
the implementation of such an initiative. The education
program has to be accompanied by a program to identify and
teach skills that are necessary to hold jobs in tourism
or related business fields, so that the inhabitants of the
Angkor Park, who are the natural guardians of the cultural
heritage, can also benefit from tourism revenues.
