Drainage system

The drainage system in Siemrap City has been extremly damaged. People have dumped soil into the ancient canals, especially along National Road 6. Even if they burry a pipe in the canal underneath the soil, the diameter is usually not big to release the water from the road rapidly. In addition, some of of the new hotels are built upon the old canal, so some of the roads in the city are flooded after heavy rains. If the department does not have the proper strategy to deal with this problem, then the road infrastructure will be destroyed someday.

This is one of the views after a heavy rain storm in Siemreap City (along the Sivutha Road)

The department has plans to renovate the old drainage system, however not in the entire city. It is divided into two areas, the North of the city is the responsibility of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Southern part of the city is the department's responsibility, funded by French government aid (AFD). The department has submitted its project to AFD. If accepted, the southern part of the city will no longer be flooded after heavy rain.

According to this map, the plan is to release the water from the Eastern part of the city and then lead it to the west water reservior, which is located in the far Eastern part of the city.
